About Cate
Catherine Wood Burton grew up in Little Rock, AR and won her first art award at the age of 16 in the Arkansas Young Artist’s Association Competition. She minored in studio art in college and after graduating with her BA in Creative Writing, decided to study Fashion Design at The Art Institute of Dallas. It was there she discovered her love of Fashion Drawing and received “Most Outstanding Portfolio” award upon graduation.
In 2008, one of Catherine’s animal paintings was selected for the the Little Rock Zoo, “Salvador Monkey and Van Goat” Show.
In 2011, Catherine began participating in The Blue Bridge Art Show in Newport, AR. She has since been a part of this large art show for numerous years. She has won three 2nd place honors and a 3rd place award for the art show’s annual “This is Delta” competition. In 2021, she won first place for “Swoon.”
In 2014, Catherine taught a summer art course at The Arkansas Arts Center, “Finding Your Whimsy in Fashion Drawing” to aged 11-13 children.
In 2019, Catherine was selected as one of (16) Drain Smart artists. The Drain Smart program is a public art program where artists paint small-scale outdoor murals on drains. These murals are created to raise awareness, educate, and protect water resources. It is provided in part by Arkansas Arts Council and through the Little Rock Audubon Society. In 2021 Catherine was selected as one of the Arkansas women artists to create vibrant paintings for collectors to buy for the permanent collection at the UAMS Breast Center located in the Winthrop P Rockefeller Cancer Center. Seven paintings were sold and donated in memorium or honor of someone to the permanent collection. In 2023, “Aura” was selected to tour Arkansas in the Arkansas Arts Council juried show, Small Works on Paper for the 2024-25 season.
Catherine has shown her work at Community Bakery, Illume Salon, and the E.O. Manees House in Argenta. At the height of Covid, she had a solo show, “Resolute”, at Cantrell Gallery in Little Rock, July-Sept 2020. In 2022, she successfully showed her second solo show at Cantrell Gallery, “Flight.”
Catherine enjoys celebrating women in her figurative art as well as showcasing her love for animals and abstracting nature. She is a member of the Arkansas Arts Council, and has collectors all over Arkansas as well as Washington DC, Texas, Washington, Colorado, California, Oregon, Minnesota, Alabama, Chicago, New Mexico and Kansas.
